Special Education: Ms. Klein’s depth and varied experience in special
education includes representing parents and children, acting as a “judge” in special education cases, and contributing research and
policy analysis of special education cases for the University of Kansas.
Her experience includes securing services for children ranging
in age from toddlers to young adults regarding issues such as:
• Attaining private school placements
• Successfully challenging
expulsions and suspensions
• Getting children placed in more integrated settings
• Ensuring a child gets a one-on-one paraprofessional
or more intensive services when needed
Ms. Klein has successfully represented children in due process proceedings as well as federal
court under laws such as the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
Ms. Klein is
often able to guide parents through the IEP and Evaluation process or participate as their attorney in the process in such a way that
litigation is not necessary. She finds that parents often are not providing the right arguments or evidence under the law even when
they have been trying for years to get the right services.
Ms. Klein’s experience wearing different hats in the special education arena,
often helps her see problems from different angles so she can resolve complex issues. From 2006 until 2010, Ms. Klein was appointed
as a Chief Hearing Officer for the Missouri Department of Secondary and Elementary Education for special education. Ms. Klein also
did policy research and analysis on special education law for the Beach Center on Disability, contributing to articles published in
journals and helping develop user friendly materials for parents.
Other Civil Rights: Ms. Klein’s work in the disability field has
often overlapped with other types of discrimination claims, including claims based on sex and race. Ms. Klein represents students
in all types of discrimination claims under Federal and State law.
